Economy and Business of Hassan District

Karnataka is considered as India’s one of the fastest growing states, with strong industrial development and a vibrant economy. Hassan district is in south-western part of Karnataka, well known for its rich history and amazing architectural works. Apart from its ancient treasure trove, the district has kept up its pace with the state growth. Hassan is very well connected by roads and railways. NH 48 and NH 206 runs through the district and contributes to a total of 15,322 kms of surface roads. It is only about 194 kms from the state capital Bangalore, which is favorable for new industries to set up their base. The nearest international airport and seaport are at Mangalore located around 174kms from the district.

Hassan has gathered importance mainly because of the tourism sector. Scattered along the district are some beautiful tourist attractions like Belur, Halebeed, Sravanabelagola, Hasanamba Temple, Gorur Dam etc. Different hotels, homestays, restaurants, dhabas have grown surrounding these spots. Even many cab and bus services are available for tourist’s connectivity.
Business in Hassan
The district mainly comprises of agrarian community, which has attracted many agro based and food processing industries. Around 393,500 hectares which is about 20% of the total irrigated land are under agriculture. Farmers have increased their productivity by introducing multiple cropping systems and that is helped by timely credit facilities provided by the state. Major crops produced in the district are Cereals (like Ragi, Paddy, Maize), Pulses (like Tur, Bengalgram, Greengram, Cowpea), Oilseeds (like Groundnut, Sesame, Castor, Mustard) and few Commercial crops (like Cotton, Sugarcane and Tobacco).  Coffee based industry is a forerunner in the district. Swarna Krishi Honda, a watershed development program has been started for the farmers of different taluks. With the help of private investment, the government has built up an e-trading infrastructure for agricultural markets.

There is a major backing from the state government for production of flori cultural crops, promotion of nurseries, organic farming and inter crop farming. The agro based industries are helping all these farmers with effective techniques of soil and water conservation and rain water harvesting.

Hassan, being an agro based economy has also diversified into different other industries like Textile, Pharma, Electronics, Dairy based units and IT & ITES. There are around eight large and medium industries present in the district with an investment amount of around Rs 630 Crore. The prominent players in the district are namely:

The district is well known for its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which has led to the development of an Industrial Growth Centre. There are three separate SEZ for Textile, Pharmaceuticals and Agro & Food Processing. This has attracted public investment of around Rs 6890 Million, over a period of 5 years (2007-08 to 2011-12).

Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), a government of Karnataka undertaking has invested around Rs 550 Crore in Textile Sector, Rs 48 Crore in Food Processing Sector, Rs 43 Crore in Pharma and Rs 686 Crore in IT & ITES to give boost to the district’s economy. KIADB has acquired 250 acres of industrial land by mid 2013 to give them to Opto Circuits India Pvt. Ltd, which is a Bangalore based medical diagnostic and interventional product maker. They are in the process to set up a consolidated manufacturing facility along with their two subsidiary units Opto Eurocor Healthcare Ltd and Opto Cardiac Care Ltd.

The state government is constantly proposing different projects for the development of Hassan as a district. Foreseeing the development of pharmaceutical and biotechnology zones, they have even proposed Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor, which will majorly connect the district.
Economy and Business of Hassan
The flourishing economy of Hassan is supported by all the basic infrastructural amenities. The power generation is handled by NTPC, KPCL and is efficiently transmitted by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Ltd. Water is also sufficiently supplied by the three reservoir projects within the district namely, Hemavathy, Yagachi and Vatehole.

In a nutshell, Hassan is a power packed district which has grown over the years to become one of the leading districts of Karnataka, with an inclusive agricultural and industrial growth. It is going strong with its tourism industry and has retained the name “Poor Man’s Ooty”.
